Program Description

Details

Let's celebrate Black History Month with the creation of this mixed media artwork.  We will recreate the Emancipation Oak* on canvas. We will paint the silhouette of a tree using a stencil and then glue on tissue paper that will represent the leaves.

*Note: The Emancipation Oak is over 300 years old and stands on the campus of Hampton University. It is where abolitionists secretly taught black people from the Tidewater area to read and write. On a winter day in 1863, enslaved people went to the tree to hear the first Southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Adults. Registration is required.
