Details

Almost everyone in Virginia Beach has heard of Grace Sherwood, the Witch of Pungo. People have been sharing stories about her since she was ducked in Lynnhaven Bay during her trial for witchcraft in 1706. This event will look at the history of the real-life woman accused of being a witch, and also examine how legends about Grace Sherwood have shaped the culture of Virginia Beach. To tell this history, it will draw from historical records, printed legends, and other sources that are available at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library. Grade 9 - Adult. Registration is required.

Scott Moore is an associate professor of history at Eastern Connecticut State University and a native of Virginia Beach. His book, The Witch of Pungo: Grace Sherwood in Virginia History and Culture was recently published by the University of Virginia Press in 2024.
